KAMAL MEATTLE (1960 BATCH)
Kamal Meattle holds a B. Sc. Degree from Joseph’s College, North Point, Darjeeling and an SM from the Sloan School of Management, MIT, USA. He also attended the Doon School in Dehra Doon, India. He was awarded a Life Time Achievement award by St. Joseph’s College in March 2007 and the MIT Distinguished Alumni Award in September 2007.
Kamal Meattle is an Indian environmental activist and CEO of Paharpur Business Centre & Software Technology Incubator Park based in New Delhi, India. Meattle held a talk at TED 2009 entitled How to Grow Your Own Fresh Air.
Kamal Meattle is also an Executive Council member of the CII-IGBC, an Indo-German member of the Delhi Committee of the CII, a member of the National CII Environment Committee & Chair of the Northern Region of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce. Kamal is a Former: 1. Governing Board member of IIT Delhi 2.
After becoming allergic to New Delhi’s polluted air in 1992, Meattle claimed to have discovered that three common houseplants could help reduce the pollutants in the air. The three plants and their properties are listed below:
Areca palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens), Mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) and Money plant (Epipremnum aureum)
He implemented this innovative bio-technology, ‘Indoor Air Quality’ in PBC to create mountain-fresh ambience that conforms to ASHRAE and WHO standards. – Recently, PBC became the first office building outside Australia to get NABERS certification for its good Indoor Environment Quality (includes acoustics, thermal comfort, air quality etc.) – It also became India’s first Healthy and Sustainable Operational building to get CETEC 5 Palm Rating – It will soon be certified for WELLNESS by USGBC. Kamal has also founded various NGOs like Save the Tree Organization, Save Two-Wheeler on Polluting Delhi and Nehru Place Greens Society. He has also led a public campaign to reduce the benzene content in gasoline from 5% to 1% to make ambient air better. He has filed PIL on environmental issues in the Hon’ able Supreme Court of India.
Awards received:
In 2005, Kamal was conferred with the PHD Chamber’s, “Ethics is Good Business Award,” by the Former President of India. In 2007, he was conferred with a Lifetime Achievement award by St. Joseph’s College, North Point, Darjeeling and the prestigious MIT’s Distinguished Alumni Award (Lifetime Achievement Award). He was also featured in the ‘MIT Technology Review’ as “The Mad Hatter of Nehru Place Greens.” He was honored with Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Award 2009 for “Outstanding Entrepreneur” and the Leadership Award 2013 by Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC). This year, in 2015, he was conferred with “Social Responsibility Award 2015” by Bharat Nirman, for his selfless contribution to the society and mankind.
