Letter #33 sent by Dan Windsor on July 29th
Hi everyone,
4 days to H Day !!

Before I start this newsletter ( I guess it's the last one till after HIHH wrap-up)  I just want to say a word of thanks for Rachni (Pawa) and Hubby.   When the ranks of The Pre Welcome had swelled to over 90, it looked like our place was going to be too small.  (I live in a compound with our house, a guest house and Mum-in-Law's house, 2 of which are vacant now.)   We could just about manage, if we used the garage and the roofs of all 3 house too.   But....... what if it rained ?  Well ! Rachni generously offered her house.  Her basement has a swimming pool, disco and snooker table, can fit 100 Spagies and still have room for 20 Paulites ( Hubby & Bro are Paulites).  I gave it serious thought.   How nice would it be to outnumber the Paulites for a change.  Then I don't have to worry about what I say    (   like I ever do HUH !! ).

Now that we have the Cruise instead of The Pre-Welcome, we are okay. Still, Thanks very much from all of us for your extremely generous offer, Rachni.

I will be writing to some of you  individually about meeting groups at the airport.   Since some you haven't see me for 30+ years, you might not recognize me.  TG, IC, Druk  arrive at Terminal 1.  Others at #2. It doesn't matter which terminal.  When you are leaving the Customs area, (with your back turned to them) turn left.   You'll see a bunch of greeters.   Look for a guy about 6 foot 3, 180 pounds, with a head of curly blond hair.  THAT'S NOT  ME.   I'll standing in the same area, holding up a sign with HIHH on it.

If Joan or I are not there, then here are some last minute details :- SILOM  SERENE.   Joan will be efficiently looking after you and wll be picking you up. MANHATTAN.   Either take a meter taxi or Airport Bus.  The Hotel address is    # 13   Sukhumvit Soi  15.   If you take the airport bus, it will come straight down to Sukhumvit and then it starts to make only Request Stops.  Look out of the left side of the bus, your stop is between Soi 13 and Soi 15.  >From there it is 10 M to Soi 15,  turn left and the hotel is 20 M down the street.

Here is a more detailed schedule for HIHH

3/08.    19.00  PM   Boat leaves the pier for River cruise and Dinner. The 2 buses leave Manhattan at 17.45  &  18.00.  Dinner should be over about 22.30 or as soon as drinks run out.

4/08     08.30  AM  First bus leaves for Hua Hin from The Manhattan. Suggest golfers take this bus so we can tee-off by 13.00 PM.
09.00  AM  second bus leaves the Manhattan.  The trip takes about 2&1/2 hours.  Lunch in on your own. Free afternoon.  12.30 to 13.00  PM   Golfers leave for The Railway course.
18.45  PM   Dinner at the Hotel.  19.00 Fr Van's openning speech and singing of school choruses.

05/08   09.30AM   buses leave from the Regent to Pala-U waterfalls for lunch and picnic.
17.00  PM   Shopping and dinner on your own in Downtown  Hua Hin.  Buses return to the hotel at 19.30 PM 20.30  PM.  CRAZY  WHIST   tournament at the Regent.   Everyone welcome,  Sign up during the cruise of the trip to HH.   Great prizes.

6/08   AM    free time,  golfers outing at The Lakeside Princess
15.30  PM  Beach Olympics
18.30  PM  Sea Food Buffet Dinner at The Chom Talay Resutarant.  This
maybe followed by a dance or Karaoke if we can find sponsors.  TBA

7/08    AM    TBA
18.45   FAREWELL  DINNER  &  AUCTION.

8/08    11.00   Tourist bus leaves the Regent with 3 stops before Bangkok.  Should arrive back in Bkk at about 18.30 PM.
Anybody want to add anything after this, please bring it up at the Pre Welcome.

EVERYONE !!

WARNING !   THIS  LETTER  CONTAINS  SOME  REALLY EXCITING  NEWS.   READ  IT AT  YOUR OWN  RISK

I just wrote a letter yesterday, but this is such great news, I couldn't wait to write another.

Many of you from LCD and NP College may remember Somprasong   or '' Daeng'' as he was known as.  Came to NP college in 1967 and was the only one of his batch that finished in 3 years instead of 7.  He is now big shot at the Tourist Authority of Thailand and appropriately India is now his territory.  The TAT is one of the few ministries that really works.

Now Daeng was always a con artist and somehow he managed to convince the Gurment uv Thailand that we guys is impotent.  80+ of us are going to descend on Thailand, spending gobs of money on shopping and massages and turning our economy around in one fell swoop.  So they are gonna to host one of our functions.  We gonna to get the red carpet and walk around looking impotent.   How's that for a kicker !!  Everyone taking part is invited, even Mo.

Good news !!   w e e e e l l l l    it keeps getting better.

TAT has a river cruiser which plies the Chao Phraya river hosting parties of upto 100 guests.  It is really gorgeous to see the city along the river at night.  Lots of food, music and drink.  They normally charge B 800++ per person.  Daeng ( you  dah  man !!)  has arranged it for us at the amazing price of  Baht 000.00 (that's right,  ZERO!!)  per.  This will replace the Pre Welcome Dinner at my place on August the 3rd,  so now Prim is speaking to me again (which ain't that wonderful, but is better than the alternative).

Since I have already charged most people B 250 per for the Pre Welcome, we will use part of this money to hire a couple of buses to and from the pier.  One mini-bus will leave from the Bangkok Serene and another 2 from The  Manhattan.  Exact schedule and locations will be posted.   What ever money left over will be refunded ( or you can will it to school or college).

SPECIAL  CALL  TO  THE EARLY  70's  CLASSES.    It is funny that so many from this group have written and said the same thing.  i.e.  they are not coming because there are so few from their age group.  It is the only group that has used this excuse for not joining.  PSHAW,  BALONEY  &  BALDERDASH.   This includes, Lisa & Pia,  My own sister Maureen, Yvonne to mention a few.  Not true !   We now have NEENA (MAZUMDAR)  DE,   DOLLY (BOSE)  NAG,  NORZING  NGYODUP, KABITA  CHOUDHURY, PRADEEP SINGHANIA,  ASHOK  SADHWANI,  ERIC  von der  RECKE,  HANS  von der RECKE.   In fact, other than the mid 60's group (we're real party-animals who are known to celebrate the openning of anything more important than a bag of potato chips, if there is even the slightest chance of free booze), yours is the largest contingent.   No more excuses !!

Which brings me to one final point.   Everytime one of you writes to me, she or he always adds that he is thankful for the work I am doing.  Cut it out !   My head is swollen enough as it is.  Others are contributing more and believe me, this is really a labour of love.  I am having so much fun.  I just love having a captive audience.  The thought that I can say in 500 words what others would in 50 is just too much fun & Then to FORCE EVERYONE TO SIT THRU ALL THE DRIVEL TO GET TO THE MEAT.   Fantastic !!   All I have to do is to avoid offending too many people each time I open my mouth.

11 days and counting !!

Dan

Letter #29 sent by Dan Windsor on July 15th
Howdy y'all,
19 days till The Pre Welcome !!  Count'em  guys.

Let's start with a bit of bad news first. The Regent Room rates were about B 200 less that originally planned even though the rooms are much better, but the menu was not that great. We've decided to upgrade the menu a little.  Also, we need to hire a Karaoke and music system to dance the nights away.  This means the Welcome Dinner and Farewell will be a bit more expensive than originally planned.  You know the old saying :-

'The Lord giveth and The Lord taketh from you''.
Let's change that to :-  ''The Regent giveth and the Regent taketh .....''
(Not bad for a BSc Wallah HUH  MO !!)

Pre Welcome and Sea Food buffet will be the same.   For those who have already been charged for events, don't worry, we'll settle accounts at the Pre Welcome, if I don't skip town by then.

The Manhattan has also given us the Single and Double at single rate of B 1000.

GRASS-EATERS &  VEGIE  TYPES.   We haven't forgotten you.  Thailand is wonderful in that grass grows just about anywhere.  Sorry !  couldn't resist.   No, we've made sure that every meal will have at least 1 or 2 pure Veg dishes.  For the Pre Welcome, Prim & Joan are also preparing a Salad Bar.  How do we solve the problem at the Seafood Buffet though ???   why  SEAWEED  of course !!  (Good one HUH  Mo!!).

ANOOP CHOUDHURY.   Some of you may know Anoop.  He is one of those Chowringhee-Chokra-Cal- types.  (Wouldn't be surprised if he lived at Queen's Park Mansions too)   He now lives and works here at The Big Mango and, as a result, has become a much nicer person.  Been very keen on HIHH.  Few weeks ago sadly announced that he had to travel, but would make it for 1 or 2 of the Dinners. Now he says he will miss it altogether.   To show that he is still a North Pointer at heart and to salve his breaking heart & broken promises never to desert us,  he has offered his apartment in Bkk for anyone on a shoe-string budget.  So, if you to save a few bucks let me know.   There is a Queen sized bedrom and twin beds plus floor space available.  Maid on duty,  Located near The Emporium on Sukhumvit Soi 39.   AND  IT'S FREE of CHARGE  (Definitely not a Sindhi!).   Let me know if anyone wants to avail himself of this kind offer.

RONNIE  LEONG. I owe you a big apology.   I said Ronnie was missing HIHH due to a cataract operation.  I should have known Ronnie better.  He ain't no WUSS .  He wouldn't let a little thing like a cataract operation stand in his way.  In fact, what Ronnie had was a corneal transplant.  Serious stuff !  I am sure we are all glad that it went well and Ronnie is feeling his old self again.  (Which is what probably caused this problem in the first place.  See Ronnie,  we told you you could go blind if you didn't stop !) Seems strange picking on someone besides Mo or the Beehareee.   We'll all be thinking of you Ronnie.

Possibility that we could change the picnic site to Pala-U waterfalls. Since the rains have started, they are supposed to look gorgeous.  This would kill 2 birds with one stone since many people expressed an interest in making a side trip there anyway.  Also got Mo's vote since there is a lot less walking involved.  For people who have had enough of swimming in the sea water, Pala-U offers a dip in fresh water.  Still need to check out :- If new roads are good enough to allow tour buses ? Cost ? Any good eating place there ? Shopping ? Apparently lots of stuff from China finds its way into Thailand via Burma.  But this far South ?? Sad note is that there is an Entrance fee, checking it out and will negotiate & will keep yas posted.

Stay tuned.

So far, response has been great.  There are a few people that will be there for just 2 or 3 days, but without exception, everyone who is there has signed up for every full event 100% attendance guaranteed.   Talk about TOTAL  IMMERSION!!

Had requests for sub-lists for favourite activities, so here goes :- (add yr names if I left you out)

Khatiza was the one perstering me for this list.  She asks if there are any more women golfers.  She says she is quite fed-up with beating the men she knows.    Hey Pockect Size !!  Them's fightin words.

Don't forget, if you are a member of Tolly, you need a Letter of Intro from your club Secretary with your Handicap Certificate.   Good idea to check at your club whereever you are if they have reciprocal arrangements with The Royal Bangkok Sport Club.   If they do, you get to use the club for free.   If not, don't fret, you can still play if you pay guest fees.  This is a good idea for tennis racketeers too as they have 10 grass courts you can avail yourself of, if you have a membership at one of their reciprocal clubs.  So just ask your club.  They have reciprocals with about 10 clubs in India and another 6 in Oz etc.

I didn't list, sun-bathing, eating, swimming, eating, napping, eating, sleeping, eating and shopping till you drop as the lists are just too long.

Regards   Dan

Letter #27 sent by Dan Windsor on July 5th, 2003
Hi everyone,

Since there were complaints about my rambling on, this letter will cut the the bullshit and give you just the facts.  People say that by the time they have waded thru all the BS, they have missed the point of each newsletter, ( if there is one !).

AIRPORT  TRANSFER.   For those who would like to find their own way into The Big Mango, here are the choices, starting with the most expensive :-

When you leave the Customs area, turn to the left. (This applies for both Terminal 1 & 2). You will find the following options awaiting you. (if someone is meeting you, they will also be on the left).
AIRPORT  LIMO.  They have a counter there and you can hire a Limo to your hotel for B 800 to B 1000 ( $19 to $24).  A tip is expected.
METERED  TAXIS.  They also have a counter where they will make sure you are not gypped. The rate into town is about B 250 to 300 plus tolls for another B 70. You pay what is on the meter, plus tolls, sometimes they get cranky.  A tip is appreciated since they have not raised fares for 10 years and they hardly make ends meet. (some of you may not know that I used to drive a cab at night in Graduate School hence I sympathize with these guys).
AIRPORT  BUS.  This is a bargain if you do not have too much luggage. There are special light Blue Mini Buses just near the Taxi stand.  Buses leave every 15 minutes.  Make sure you take the one to the SUKHUMVIT AREA  for The Manhattanites and SILOM  AREA  for the Serene ones.  It costs B 100 per person.  The buses go on the expressway and do not stop till they reach town. From there, they stop at all regular bus stops but only on request. For Manhattan types, this is the 4th or 5th stop on Sukhumvit.  Just look out of the left hand side  for Soi 13.  Your stop is between Soi 13 and Soi 15. You can also use this to the airport (but on the other side of the street.  ( Duh !! ).
CITY  BUSES.  This is only for the light packers and adventurers. You can leave the airport area, do not cross the highway, (do not even attempt to cross the highway).  Look for airconned buses # 513 for SUKHUMVIT  &  #504 FOR SILOM.  These are big dark blue buses with all windows closed.  Cost only B 15 per, but it stops at every stop (about 55 of them before reaching your hotel).

HOTEL   Have decided on the Cha-Am Regent in Hua Hin.
SINGLE & DOUBLE    B 1400 per room ( $ 34) incl breakfast.  For those of you Single room types, I will book you a double since it costs the same anyway.  This way you can give your breaker coupon to someone else.
DELUXE  ROOMS       B 2100   ( $51)
JUNIOR  SUITE           B 2,600  ( $63)
Please let me know if you want to change to a better room. ( for those who haven't done so yet ).

If you want to visit the hotel website to see what you are in for: www.regent-chaam.com

If you need to leave behind a contact point here are the hotel co-ordinates :-
Tel  ( 66  032 )  45  1240  upto 1249
Fax ( 66  032 )  47  1491  or  2
email   :-  info@regent-chaam.com

My home phone is  ( 02)  651  1467
My home fax      is   ( 02)  651  1469
Mobile                    (01)   933  8651
My office phone is   ( 02)  390  2120

I will have the Manhattan connections for you next week.

Please keep this letter, not only for the useful info therein, but it might be worth something when I die as it is the first letter I have ever written without saying something sarcastic or stupid.
27 DAYS  AND  COUNTING.
Love   Dan
Letter #26 sent by Dan Windsor on June 30, 2003
It's only  meeeeeeee !

Well,  things are starting to take shape, (not Mohan's shape luckily!!).
We have finally decided on the Cha-Am Regent since we got such a deal. It is a 5 star hotel ( but a bit old so let's say 4 star).  The rates are even lower than  The Golden Sands, has a private restaurant we can comandeer for our evenings.
Contrary to  Mo's complaints :-
1.   We got a very good rate,  I think it will be B 1,400 for SINGLE or DOUBLE incl breakfast.
2.   There is a new wing which we hope to colonize, if it is large enough for us.
3.   The pool & beach are not separated by a highway.  We are right on the beach.  Even Mo can make without taking a cigarette break 1/2 way.
4.   It is true that the hotel area is expensive.   Hotel restaurants average B 160 per dish and the superM is tiny.   However, there is a side gate that brings you to same restaurants and supermarkets that are next to The Golden Sands.  5 minutes walk.

Cal Batch has about 14 coming on TG so I'll arrange pick-up and transport to hotel etc for B 150 per.  For those arriving on IA, I'll see what I can do.   In the next few weeks I'll send all the touristy info like how to get to Bkk from the airport etc etc, so please stay tuned.  Going to the airport on your return is easy and we'll play it by ear as there are many different departure dates etc etc.

The program is also taking shape.  So far, every one has signed up for all the main events, which makes it easy for us.  These are :-

Joan and I are waiting for pamphlets from the Tourism Authorities. Any response ?   Any preferences ??
GOOD  ON  YA   MO.  Nice suggestion!!  Doesn't mater what the world says, you are not that dumb.

Letter #23 sent by Dan Windsor dated May 29, 2003
Helloooo  everyone,

Sad to hear that Fr Burns will not be able to join us.  He has to go to Canada to celebrate a Jesuit Jubilee.  Fr  has just completed his 60th years as a Jebbie.  Congratulations Father!!  We'll miss you a lot.   Maybe you should give the Jubilee a miss, there'll be another one in 60 years.  Can't say the same about HIHH though !!

Good response so far for the PRE - WELCOME DINNER (even Mo),  The SIGHTSEEING TRIP (even Mo)  on the way back,  BEACH  OLYMPICS ( not Mo)  and even the PALA-U (BURMA) TRIP (even Mo). Thanks to those who wrote.  It looks like the more activities the better.  Old age aint gonna slow any of us down huh !

As for the sightseeing return trip.  The key is The Bat Cave.  They usually start out at about 5 PM so we should aim to be there by 4.30 PM.  Lots of snack and fruit stands around to keep you busy.  That means if we leave the hotel at 12.30,  we get to Marukathayawan Palace by 1.00.  An hour there is enough, so that allows us about 2 hours to get to the cave.  Just fine!!  We then leave the caves at 5.15  (Once you've seen the first 75 million bats, you've seen them all),  and get back to Bangkok at 6.30 PM.   In time for dinner and shopping.  The cost will be about B 400 ( instead of B 200 for direct return trip).  Will speak to the bus Co ASAP.

TOBGYE  DORJI & ROSHAN MASSEY insist they want to do a striptease before the auction.  For once Mo came up with a great idea.  Let's have a slightly different version of the auction.  Tobgye and Roshan will bid how much they are willing to pay to be allowed to strip and everybody else bids how much we want to pay them to keep their clothes on.  I am sure it will raise lots of money.  Everyone should bring blindfolds in case we lose..

Good idea  MO!!  This is the first time I've ever seen you in The Thinking Pool.  ( Albeit in the shallow end, but it's a start!).

Roshan says I misquoted him in letter # 21.
1.  He did not say ''balding''. I admit I added the (ing)  part because that is hitting below the belt.  It is something I am sensitive about ever since my daughter said to me a few years ago  '' Daddy!! your grey hair is getting bald''
2.   I left out  ''Tom-Yum-Eating-slob''.  Here too another sensitive point.  I have vowed to lose 12 Kgs by Christmas, (at least 7 Kgs before HIHH).  My paunch & I are getting divorced, I get custody of the Tom Yum Soup and week-end visitation rights to the Ice Cream.  No Fat jokes allowed.

Shashi was also upset because I have not made any jokes about her.  Well, love !!  having a Paulite for a brother is suffering enough.   Even though you have tried to disown him and play nice to us NP types.  The scars are there, no getting away from it.

Mo asked how come I don't say anything about Rajiv Dutt.   Rajiv was a Paulite who went to college at NP.  Well, 2 reasons.  His mail keeps bouncing, so I have taken him off the address book and he is bigger than me.  Anyway, Rajiv is coming to HIHH so I'll have plenty of time to pick on him in person.

Back to HIHH.   Since I am the kind of guy that has never had second thoughts about taking advantage of someone when they are down, I have been researching a couple of other hotels in HH.  Tourism is so down that there are some real good deals.  e.g.   One day I needed someone to validate my parking ticket ( anything to save B 50 )  so I asked to see the manager of The Hilton.  Their normal rooms at B 5,200 are going for B 2,700.   The bathroom alone is bigger than any normal hotel room.  Still, it's above our budget though, but it did get me free parking.   There are other deals, so Joan and I have decided to take everybody's fate in our hands.   We are shopping around for some better deals and decided that we do not need to decide till the first week of July.   Don't worry, we'll keep the limit at B 1,500 per double &keep everyone in the same hotel.

SHASHI & RAJEEV are looking after the music.   If anyone has some old tapes, CD's they want played, bring them along.   ''Love those oldies, but mouldies''.  No Rap or Acid Rock please !!

LOUIS BANKS  had to cancel lately because he got a gig lined up on those days.   Too bad, I was really looking forward to listenning to our home- grown talent.  Maybe there's a change of plans Louis ???   Still hoping.

Some of you may wonder why the tops of your mail has some unrecognizable name & address on it.  Well, according to my computer dept, when I send mail to my whole list in one shot, I always get about 25 ''returneds'' and ''undeliverables''.  However, when I split my address book into groups of about 20, then I have only 1/3 as much.  However, some names continue to bounce :-

Shankar Rajkhowa
Surinder Jaswal
SP  Agarwala
Shyushyu
and somebody whose address starts with  ''Tru..''  who has mysteriously gotten into my add book an dcnanot be erased.
Always have trouble with these,    & Rajiv Dutt sometimes

Don't know what to do with these guys.  If you meet each other, please ask around if everyone has been geting my newsletters.  I hate to think there is someone out there that I failed to offend and  I refuse to believe so many have intentionally put up Firewalls against me.

Dan

Here is the rough schedule (in multi color no less). Black printing means that it is pretty much set. Red ink needs feed back as they are suggestions and I prefer to go with what the consensus says :-  No longer a dictatorship

SUNDAY  NOON. Golf at The Sports Club. Members of Tolly can play for B50, plus caddy fees. Others can join in if they want, I think the cost is B1,000. Let me know if you are interested. OPTIONAL. We might do this again on Saturday Aug 9th when we get back to Bangkok.

SUNDAY  PM. PRE-WELCOME  DINNER. Either at The Manhattan (cost B400)  or I prefer at my place. But it depends on the numbers & the weather. I have a great caterer who can do this for B250 per. I think we need this to tie up loose ends, not just to say ''Hey''.  Those who have not paid for dinners, transports and to sign up for other events. Can also bring the items they want to donate for the auctions, prizes etc.         OPTIONAL

MONDAY  10 AM. Bus leaves for Hua Hin from the Manhattan. We stop for a leg stretch at Wang Kaeow at about 11.30. There are lots of food stalls so everyone can do a little sightseeing and grab a bite. We'll leave at 12.30 and reach HH at about 13.30 PM. Cost will be B200 per person, some have paid and the rest can pay at the Pre Welcome.  EARLY  SIGN  UP  SUGGESTED.

MONDAY Night is official Welcome Dinner & Dance. Father Van will open the show and both NP and LC will be expected to sing their school Choruses (Mo you are excused). (Cost B450 per person). I assume attendance will be 100%.

TUESDAY  A.M.   Golf outing at the Railway Course. OPTIONAL
TUESDAY  P.M.    Outing to Hua Hin town. Free transportation supplied by hotel.   ( No curfew !! ).

WEDNESDAY AM. Beach Olympics. Some Burmese types may want to take a 1/2 day trip to PALA - U WATERFALLS at the Burmese Thai Border. 1 hour bumpy ride in rented pick-up trucks. OPTIONAL.
WEDNESDAY   AFTERNOON. Crazy  Whist, with prizes (Cost probably free unless you want some snacks included). OPTIONAL
WEDNESDAY  NIGHT. If there is enough interest, we will have Fund Raising Social & Dinner  (Cost B 400). Bachelor Auction, Flower or Coupon Dance etc etc. OPTIONAL.

THURDAY  AM   Golf outing to Lakeview Princess Country Club. OPTIONAL.
THURSDAY  P.M.  Farewell Dinner & Dance. Silent Auction, Fr's speech and a better rendition of the 2 Chorusses.

FRIDAY  NOON. Either direct bus back to The Manhattan  (Cost B200) or if there is enough interest, we do the tourist thing. On the way back to The Big Mango, we stop at Hua Hin Palace (Marukathayawan)  and Bat caves ( one of the wonders of  natural history) where you can watch at a distance as 100 million bats stream out of a cave at dusk. (Cost B 400 per) OPTIONAL. It might work out there are 2 buses so one will be direct and the other the tourist version.

Wednesday Night needs a bit of explaining. Besides the bachelor Auction, we'll sell flowers, say B100 per 5 pcs. Then everytime you cut in and ask for a dance you've got to give the girl a flower. Whoever gets the most flowers wins a prize. Husbands are expected to cheat and give their wives 5 or 10 flowers per dance. (Shashi, No you don't get extra flowers if you decide to strip). Then we can do the same for the guys. Money goes to Hayden Hall, NP and LCD.

Now come on,  let's have some feed-back. Everyone seems to be ''going with the flow''. I am playing dictator here!!

Here is a game that we might enjoy. It will require some research on your parts. Some of you may know that word game where you change, add or subtract one letter at a time and change one word to another. e.g. BAD  to GOOD.    BAD .... bOd (?) ..... God ... goOd.  Well, it's based on this idea. I call it. FOLLOW  THE CONNECTION. (very imaginative ! ....... not !!!  I didn't say I was any good at it. Maybe' if I was a B.A  Eng Hons, I might have come up with something better). I'll start :-

How do you connect  EDDIE  SHUE (NP  1956) to VIKROM  MAHATAPHONGSE  (NP 1962)

EDDIE  SHUE  married  PHYLLIS  CHEN-SEE    from  Kingston Jamaica Phyllis  has  a niece  nee  JO  ANNE CHEN - SEE  also from Jamaica JO ANNE  married ANDY  WANG  from Bangkok Thailand ANDY  WANG  is  VIRKOM'S COUSIN. (at this point you can mentally play the music from the old TV series Twilight Zone in the back ground)

Andy was also my roomie is the US and is a current golfing buddy, so we are all related. He was on holiday in Canada last year and met Uncle-in-law Eddie who told him that he was at an NP reunion in the US in 2002.  In fact, Eddie generously supplied many of the old photos that are on the website.  That is when Andy told Uncle Eddie that his fellow golfing nut and his cousin are both NP  boys. (I don't care, I still refer to meself as a '' boy'' till I am 95).

Small world Huh ! Maybe some of you could think of some more connections like this to show how we become linked, indirectly around the world.

See you soonest,

Dan

I hope to almost finalize all details in the next 2 weeks. All those who have not signed up, please do so ASAP. If you know someone on the edge, give them a nudge, the more the merrier. After this, we will hold 10 rooms on stand-by so you can still sign up until the last 2 weeks and even cancel (God forbid) if you wish,  but we need the final figures so we can plan dinners, busses etc etc. I will also have to send the Calcutta list to Mo and I will be contacting some of you personally to summarize what you have paid etc.

So far,  this is the feed-back I got on various points. All of it, Absolutely fantastic !!
1.   NOT A  SINGLE  CANCELATION. Thanks for hanging in there, SARS  or not.
2.   EVERYONE  who is coming has signed up for WELCOME  DINNER so I am just going to assume it is part of the package when you sign on.
3.   One couple will be leaving early so will skip the FAREWELL. EVERYONE ELSE HAS SIGNED ON FOR THAT. So this will also be assumed.
4.   More activities have been requested and will be added on. In my next letter I will also have a rough schedule.

See you soonest,

Dan

Now to a less serious topic. SARS.
It is really great to read comments from you guys. So far only 2 have written to mildly suggest re-scheduling  (ONLY  MAYBE). I have had over 20 letters saying something to the effect of  ''Sars or Not, I am coming''. We can't let it dictate to us and change our lives.

Still, I am not saying ''full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes''. So far Thailand has been almost untouched.  Bangkok is a very spacious city  and  Hua Hin even more so. I am keeping the reservations and have still blocked the hotel rooms etc. If the situation changes for the worst in the next 2 months, then we can still re-schedule.  For those who have paid, we will get a full refund if you can't come.

In fact,  since I am the kind of guy who has never hesitated to take advantage of other people's misfortune, I have actually looked at a couple of other hotels. Bookings are down so there are so many deals out there.  So far, none have come close to being what we need so I am still keeping my eyes open, e.g. The ANANTARA  which is a five-star spa is offering double rooms, inclusive of 1 hour massage at the Sauna for B 3,000 ($70), down from rack rate of B 10,000. It is still above our budget, but there are others too, so I'll keep looking.

On a happy note,   Ken  GILSON  an avid and accomplished golfer, will join us at HIHH.  He was in NP 1942 & 1943.  Can you top that ?? Showing the typical vim & vigour of us NP types,  even at his advanced age of 73  Ken also has a 9 year old son (who may or may not join us). Great to have you Ken.

On a sad note, last month  Larry La PRISE  passed away in his sleep at the age of 93. Who is Larry ??  you may ask. He is the inventor of the dance called Hokey Pokey.  The funeral has been delayed for 5 weeks because they had a lot of problems putting him in his coffin.  You know,  they put his left foot in   and ...... then .........

We must honour his memory at the HIHH with a dance.

Dear Folks,

Have had a bit of feed-back about the age of the most attendees from HIHH. A few people have said they are hesitant to come because there aren't many from their year attending.  It is true that most of the participants were in Darj from the years 1955 to 1975, BUT IT  REALLY DOESN'T MATTER. I have found from personal experience that we have so much in common from our time in Darj  that it really makes no never mind when you were there. I made an instant connection with people with whom I had not shared more than 2 sentences in al my years there. Vikrom Mahataphongse told me that he had the same experience. He struck up an instant friendship with Monishi at a reunion that has since continued. They were 3 years and 4 geographical times zones apart at NP and he couldn't remember who he was.

As a matter of fact, you were better off that way Patrick !!  Had you remembered Monishi from school, you would have stayed away from that reunion altogether. His nickname ''Pest'' was very well earned and was in fact a euphemism.  He was the pain in the a..  and from what I hear, has improved little since.

Heck, I even went to a Paulite Reunion last year ( no, no-one made a pass at me ! )   and actually was able to spend 3 hours without the urge to ''bash someone up''.  I figured, if I could bond with Paulites, how much more fun would it be with NP & LC  types ?  That is why I am so Gung Ho about this reunion.
By the way, they never invited me back.  Maybe they didn't like it when the first question I asked was ''Is it true that most of you are queers?''  Me  & my big mouth !!

Sent on April 28, 2003
SARS  is still hanging around. Thank God, Thailand has been very lightly affected.  Maybe it is because we live in more spacious areas that China, Singy (Singapore) or Honkees (Hong Kong) and those other places.  It seems we are safer than Canada and Oz among other countries.

There are a couple of SARS cases in our hospitals, BUT  THERE ARE  ZERO CASES ON OUR  GOLF  COURSES! proving once again that the golf bug is stronger than anything nature can come up with.  So full speed ahead Dickoo! (and other golf & tennis nuts)

So long !!

Letter #17 - sent by Dan Windsor March 31st, 2003
Attention  all  HIHH  wallahs,

Hold  your horses ....
...... keep your pants on ....
Houston, we have a problem.

After delaying us over the past 2 months and postponing their final quote 2 weeks at a time, the people at The Majestic Creek Hotel finally saw it fit to delay another month before deciding whether the hotel will be closed for renovations  ''sometime over the next 3 months''.  So, we've decided to tell them to go to heck ( Fr Van reads these letters so I'd better not say ''hell'')

Have no fear, we BSc types have an alternative.  The Golden Sands Hotel.  In the same class as Majestic Creeps, there are a lot of plusses and few minuses :-

1.  There is the option of Single rooms at B 1,400 per ( MC had none)
2.  Double rooms are still B 1,600.
3.  Junior Suites are B 2,200 and there are 30 available.  MC had only
4, none available to us.  All rates, with breakfast.
4.  We have locked in 50 rooms with an option for another 20.  They will
allow us till end of May to confirm the exact amount.  By the way, so
far 48 rooms have bene booked.
5.   2 New tennis courts on the grounds ( Mohan and Arnold can smile,
Mohan Das, not Mohan the Shiv).   MC had none.
6.  It is located near a fishing village.  That means there are many
shops and restuarants around the complex.  MC was secluded, with no
shops around.  Both offer free shuttle to town.
7.  Both have gorgeous swimming pools, saunas,  meeting rooms etc etc.
8.  Quality of rooms are the same high standard.  All with Ocean view. The beach is cleaner as it is further from town.  Both are wheelchair friendly.

The 2 drawbacks that I can see are :-
1.  There are no big suites at The Golden Sands.  For a Double Room suite, you will need a Junior and an adjoining.  No Triples etc.
2.  The GS is bigger, 200 rooms compared to 70 at MC. They will try to keep us in one wing and we will still outnumber others. However, at the MC their biggest plus was the fact that we would practically have the run of the house.

I doubt if anyone will want to change their mind due to this switch, but if you want to change your type of room, then please let me know. For those who sent their credit card details, we have not charged the room to your card yet, so there will be no change.  We are still hoping to squeeze a few Baht off the price.  If we succeed  and when the price is final then I will start charging.

All the best,

Dan

Had some letters about expensive fares to Bangkok.  Shouldn't be !! Check around before buying.  Some people I know just Bought round trips from NY to BKK for less than $900. TG (Thai Inter)  has very friendly rate for those buying tickets outside the country.  SQ (Singapore) & Eva and China (Taiwan) all have good deals. I also hear that United and Northworst (not a typo!) are flying quite empty and offering deals.

As for India, it is cheaper to fly to Bangkok that domestically.

If you hear of some good deals, let me know and I'll pass the word around.

Sayonara,
Dan

Dear  Grumblers,
Okay, now that we all but ruled out the Strippers, let's discuss the SILENT AUCTION.

For those who have never taken part in one, this is what we do :-

1.   Generous souls donate something of value ( or it could be something comical).
2.   These goodies are displayed on a table and each item has a sheet of paper with some info about it.
3.   During the course of the evening, people walk by and  take a good look at the item and if they are interested write their bids on the piece of paper.  Each bid is naturally higher than the previous.
4.  When time is up, the last bid should get to buy the item.
5.  I say ''should'', because we cheat and just use that as a starting point to try to shame more bids from the audience, like a normal auction.

The money we raise will be shared by NP, LCD for renovations and to Hayden Hall projects.  It's a lot of fun.  Last year a bottle of Tibetan Viagra started at Rs 200  finally went for Rs 1,000  when Cho and Tobgye got into a bidding war  Cho finally won and promptly gave it to Tobgye ''who needed it more''.  It turns out, they were both trying buy it for the other.  Deviant minds think alike.  I never botherred to bid on it.  I just waited till the end and then switched it with my bottle of Laxative.

Still waiting for more ideas.

Dear  Perverts,

Alright, alright!!  Enough with the volunteer strippers. Especially from you guys !!   If you don't watch it, HIHH will be crawling with Paulites. (Including Shashi's brother. See Shashi, I told you I'd get back at you for your nasty comments.  That'll teach you to call me a skirt chaser!!). Anyway, no more volunteers needed from you guys. Haven't you figured why they had doors on our shower stalls.  You were horrible to look at 35 years ago and I am sure you haven't gotten any better looking now.

Some have brought up August heat in Bangkok.  Other than 2 weeks of ''wintry conditions'' where the temp goes all the way down to 22 C ( 71 F to US types)  we have a fluctuation of only 3 degrees throughout the year, averaging around 30C (86 F).  The hottest is in April & May, when the humidity is also highest.

August is not very hot. We sometimes get rain, but it will rain 1 or 2 hours a day at about the same time for a 4 or 5 days and then stop for 1 week. Hell !  at NP we would actually get a ''Sunshine Holiday'' under those conditions. We would have to be extremely unlucky for it to have any effect on our plans.

Anyway, HH has a lovely breeze all day long and our hotel is right on the beach.  The rooms are air-conned. What more do you need.

Bring your sun tan lotions.

See ya !   Dan

Letter #11 - sent by Dan Windsor February 7, 2003
Now you've gone and done it !
A whole helluvalot of you ( actually about 2) have written to say that they liked reading my letters.  In exact words, they say that my ''letters make them homesick for Darjeeling''. Okay, okay  Mo,  I added the ''home'' part.  Stop twisting my ears now !! Anyway, it's like telling a politician that you liked his speech.

We're doing well on sign-ups and have really got lines open.  Some of the mail  ''Bouncers'' have been taken care of :-

Achal Bedi   does get his mail
Got new adds for Chuck and Hishey Basi from Tim Mc Donald
Rajiv Datt got all his letters.

Still no news from Dinny Devitre, Shankar Rajkowa, S.P. Agarwal.

Speaking of S.P.,  how about Enisha ( ee Agarwal) any news from any where ??

By the way !   A lot of info on the forms is just for you to plan your costs of your trip.  You don't need to sign up. i.e. Seafood Buffet Dinner, Taxi from airport, Private session with a stripper, etc

Also,  the cost of Welcome Dinner and Farewell Dinner are the Maximum we can expect.  It will definitely be less once we fix the menu.

Can you stand some more good news ??  Just when you thought things couldn't get any better,..... The Manhattan in Bangkok has just lowered the Double and Triple. They used to be B 1200 and B 1600, now they are B 1000 and B 1400 resp.  So the Double and Single are the same price. Now.......   if that isn't enough incentive to find someone to share the room with .....

Been enjoying photos bouncing back and forth (especialy of the girls. You guys just don't seem to get better looking with age). Please be sure to bring them to HIHH as well as Autograph books (remember them !! ) if you still have them.

Someone asked about  SILENT  AUCTION  will cover this in one of my future lessons.

Some sadistic Bas......d  suggested a HUNK AUCTION.  This is like a Bachelor Auction, but since there aren't many bachelors  it'll just be us guys.   Kind of embarassing if you're left standing there with nary a bid !!  Maybe if we started the bidding at B 5 and it included a free car wash plus first dance ???

It should be a very short one.  I can imagine heavy bidding for Arnold Mc Kenzie and then we close shop.

How about Mohan Shivdasani ?   Seriously  Mohan.  Yes, the same Mohan we have all grown to know and love.   Hear me out.   I am sure lots of you ladies would pay plenty NOT  to have to dance with him.

Then there is Amrit Kuruvilla !!   Pity Amrit is not coming!  Shoot,  I'd pay handsomely to have him NOT SING at the Kara-oke.

Cheerio !!          Dan

Howdy y'all,

Happy  Chinese New Year to youse all.

BOUNCING  MAIL. Every letter seems to get a few bounces. There are some people whose mail bounces just about every time, so I worry if there is something wrong :-

Achal Bedi
Basi  ( Jerry & Chuck)
Rajiv  Datt
Ronnie Da Costa ( Rotary address)
Dinny Devitre
Eric von der Reicke
Sheyla Khurana
Tim Mc Donald
Ronnie Leong
Srila  Mehmood
Shankar Rajkhowa
Samee Lawyer
Tashi Sonam Gyamtso

If you are on the list,   then please check to see if you have been receiving all the mail up till this point. If you know someone on the list, give them a call and check with them if something is wrong. Thanks.

MY  EMAIL  ADDRESS.   Ladies!!! My sister made a mistake. Please note my correct email add for HIHH as above.  HIHH@ddallwood.co.th   The other add is for business.  I still get the mail, but it is automatically cc'd to 5 other departments. See guys, women do make mistakes ( other than whom they marry !)   My Prim is real good that way, every time SHE makes a mistake she allows me to say I'm sorry and forgives me right away.   Which brings me to the philosophical question that has puzzled mankind since the days of Socrates :-

If a man says something and his wife is not around to hear it. Is he still wrong ???

CALCUTTA WALLAHS (and others). Let me introduce you to one, Mohan SHIVDASANI.  Mohan went to NP College 1965 to 1968 and graduated a couple of years to spare. (Engl Hons no less!!). He is known now as Kuku, but many know him by his old moniker   MO THE  SHIV. He was built differently then. To illustrate what I mean, one day when my 14 year old Gavin saw Tobgye, me and Mo standing in a line, he pointed at Tobgye and said '' Emperor''. Pointed at me and said ''Penguin'' then at Mo and said ''Emperor Penguin''   nuff  said.

But I digress. Mo has done 4 things worthy of mention in his upcoming biography :-

1.  He went to NP
2.  He made wonderful friends who love him in spite of everything.
3.  He married the lovely and sympathetic Vinita, proving once again that all women marry below their status.
4.  He was the driving force behind LDID  in 2001, which led to HIHH this year.

To make a long story even longer and less interesting,  I have volunteered him to be our Liaison Officer in Calcutta.  He is getting together some info on flights from Cal to Bangkok, but will also help with Bombay, Delhi etc.  The idea is to do block booking and get good rates and to also arrange transportation to & from airports etc.

The new Foreign Exchange Laws in India allows you to send money out to confirm hotels etc.  However, to pay $ 10 bank charges for a $ 50 to $ 100 payment makes little sense.  So, if you contact him and pay him in Rupees, he will take care of it and send it to me in one lot.  Even though he is Sindhi, he can be trusted with money.

Call him at 2229  5848.  Don't lose this number as he gets cranky after you ask him for it for the fifth time
Hey  Mo !!  the Emperor says he will stopover in Cal on his way so he will fly with you. Flying first class befits his royal status and the low cost allows him to maintain his position as the Vice President of the Bhutan Miser Club.
Thaaaats  all   folks  !!

(Just realized that I have used up almost one whole letter on one guy alone).  Scary !!

Sursum  Corda and Listunnnnnn!!  (that's the closest thing to a Loreto Motto I can think of),

I've just down-loaded Joan's address book into mine, so for newcomers from LCD....   Gotcha,   now you're mine, aaallllll mine    Hahahaha. For those who refused to dance with me at the Socials.  My day has come and hell has frozen over!!

Seriously, we decided there was no use in duplicating our efforts. Don't worry, when you write back you can still write to Joan.  We share info daily.  Joan and I meet regularly since she is one of the few relatives who is still on speaking terms with me.

Thanks for the supportive letters that have been rolling in.  Many people are reminescing about recent re-uinons and I have been looking some of your photos and can't wait for ours to get going.  I am hoping ours will be different from the 1 night of booze and memories.  We want to make it more like a TOTAL IMMERSION for 4 days.  We'll be with each other on the beaches, the swimming pools, golf courses, tennis courts,
dining rooms and the dance floor.  A captive audience to listen to our life stories in an atmosphere sort of like hostel days, but with some luxuries (and baths more than once in 3 days!).

Most are bringing their significant others, which is a good sign.  Prim stopped bringing me to her class re-unions years ago, which is just as well.  Everytime she'd introduce me to another old class-mate, she would gently squeeze Prim's arm, roll her eyes and say softly ''I'm soooo sorry for you''.  Well, even if most girls are ashamed of whom they landed up with, most of us guys are more than proud to introduce our conquests ( some of whom we  married).  Maybe that explains why most guys are coming with families, but girls are coming alone !!!   As the saying goes :-

BEHIND  EVERY  SUCCESSFUL  MAN  IS A GREAT WOMAN. HOWEVER, SOME OF US REGULAR GUYS ARE  JUST  AS  LUCKY.

MORE  COMMENTS.
Being a golfer, I suffer from tunnel vision.  I think the world is made up of 2 types of people. Golfers and those who can count honestly. There are a couple of clubs near-by with badminton and tennis courts. So yes, do bring your rackets.  I might even join you, but I am afraid that my 9 year old son, Matthew, might call my bluff and challenge me to
a game. For golfers, golf club rental ranges from B 200 to 500 so it is upto you if you want to bring you own clubs.  Most airlines allow a set of clubs, not counted towards your luggage weight allowance. Don't forget, if you are interested to play in Bangkok, The Sports Club has reciprocal agreement with 45 other clubs world-wide which allows you to play for $ 1 green fees.   Tell me which club you belong to and I'll check for you.

SIGHT SEEING.  I'll link up later with the Toursim Authority's site and give you and idea the sightseeing available around Hua Hin.

AIRTICKETS.   Bangkok is accessible from any part of the world with a choice of discount fares,  Start checking now.  If you are coming from India, you might find it cheaper to fly to Bangkok than to other parts of India.  If you are coming from other countries and you want to make a side trip to India, buying ticks from here is often cheaper than domestic air travel in India.  Of you want to use Bangkok as your hub
and book other flights, side trips from here, I can get you this info. (Okay, Okay, I'l get Shashi to do it !  Sheeeesh Mo Lay off ! )

Well !!  The sign-up form is ready.  As I said :-
1.  If you have problems sending attachments, you can just send back the pertinent info, using the Form as a guideline.
2.  If you are afraid of internet security, then you can fax back the Credit Card part.  You can use the number on the Form or my fax (66 2)  381  2479.
3.  For People coming via Kalkota, Mo Shivdasani has ''volunteered'' to
be our contact point.  Most of you don't have C edit Cards.  And, altho you are allowed to buy a bank draft to pay deposits for hotels etc when you are planing to attend a meeting.  This is costly and troublesome. More about this in the next letter.

Finally, some have asked for names of those coming.  Here goes :-

HOLD  THE PHONES !!

I've been using the calendar for 2002 all along. (Okay Mo, us BSc wallahs do make mistakes too !!). All dates we have in previous letters should now be + 1. (Sounds like how I add my golf scores Huh!!)
i.e.
Aug 2 & 3rd in Bangkok
Aug 4th, leave for Hua Hin
Aug 4, 5th, 6th and 7th  in Hua Hin
Aug 8th, leave for Bangkok
Aug 8th and so on Bangkok.

For those who already replied, I'll make the corrections for you here. The sign-up form you get will have the correct dates.  (Joan did them, hence........).

Surprised nobody pointed it out to me earlier !!   Maybe we are all mellowing in our old age!

Sursum  Corda,

Boy! once I get going, there is no stopping. Must be under the influence of Paljor Dorji who visiting (for those of you who have forgotten, his nickname was ''Yapper'' and justifiably so). He hates the name, so I'm sorry I brought it up Benjy. I've got some more news.
GOLFERS  first  (Mo,  you and others of your ilk can skip this part). There are 8 golf courses around Hua Hin.  Green Fees range from about $20 to $40. I'm sure we'll squeeze in a couple of rounds.

The good news is for around Bangkok.  We might be able to get in a round or 2 in one of the 20 courses before & after Hua Hin.  However, there is a lovely private course in the middle of town belonging to The Royal Bangkok Sports Club.  This club has a reciprocal agreement with a number of courses (45) all around the world that allows to play for about $ 1 only green fee.  In India, they are :-
TOLLYGUNGE
CALCUTTA CRICKET & FOOTBALL CLUB
DELHI  GYMKHANA
WILLINGDON  SPORTS  CLUB  ( Mumbai)

For other countries, write me if you are interested. If you want to use the club for golf (or any other purpose) you will need to:-

1. Present a leter of Introduction from The Membership Office of your club.
2. Bring your club I.D.  card
3. If you want to play golf, ask them to mention your handicap.

HIHH.  Have had a few asking what this means. Well, in Nov 2000 we had LDID which stood for Last Dance In Darjeeling. Since we are all older, but not necessarily wiser, we decided to call this  'Huffing It in Hua Hin''.

SUGGESTION  from  Sathitphong LENAVAT  when you write, please tell us which years you attended LCD / and or NP. You might as well tell us your spouse's name too.

SUGGESTION # 2. As a fund raiser, one evening we are going to auction off dance partners (male & female).  There will also be a Kara-oke bar. Yes Mo, it is acceptable to make a contribution to make sure that a certain person(s) refrains (or is restrained) from dancing or singing, but you have to make it worth my while. I must admit that the last time Amrit's singing did make me homesick for the National Geography's Special on mating calls of the almost extinct Asian Hyppo.

Finally, I have been getting mail bounced back from certain people. Someone please tell me how to get in touch with them:

SCHOOL  CHORUS. Will bring copies of the words for NP Chorus, start practising.  LC girls, anybody have the complete words ??

Ciao

Sursum Corda,

Sorry L.C. girls, but I couldn't think of your motto (other than ''You North  Point guys are sooooo freeeesssshhh''). How many times have we guys heard that HUH !

Before I start running off at the mouth, thanks for the responses and kind words. Believe me, I'm not doing that much. Joan is the one who will have all the hard work to do later.  It's the slow season and I just happen to have some time on my hands until my customers get over their Holiday Cheer and start placing some orders.  All I know is that had such a great time when we met at LDID in Noember 2001 that I wanted to do it again. I can guarantee that HIHH will be just as wonderful.

There are a couple of things I forgot to mention and wanted to add to give you a final armtwisting:-

1.  SPOUSES  ( Mo, shouldn't the plural be Spice ??). After LDID we all agreed that not only did the spouses enjoy themselves, but they contributed greatly to everyone else's enjoyment.  They were just great. Father Burns even said that he never expected that his group of Gundas would all become so successful in life.  He couldn't figure out how, until he met our wives. We all married above ourselves. Officially, they are no longer our better halves, but our better 90%'s. (in the case of Tobgye Dorji, it was more like 99%, right Mo !).

Bring them along, and the kids too ( Grand Kids ??). Hua Hin is a fantastic family resort and all the programs will include the Spouses.

2.  ROOMS. I have listed some of you as Double Rooms, even though you might be coming alone. The reason is in Hua Hin the cost is almost the same for a Single room and a Double room.

Double Rooms are almost all taken already so if you can share a 2 bedroom suite or 3 bedroom suite it would help  The cost per person works out to the same.

3.   SIGN  UP  & REGISTERING.  The form is almost ready.  Still need a bit more info from the hotels etc.  Since we have to make our reservations GUARANTEED  you will have to send some payment when you confirm.  In most cases, it can be done by Credit Card.  On the Form, we will supply a secured fax number for you to send this Credit Card info. Some people ( like in India)  do not have credit cards.  It turns out that the Reserved Bank of India allows you to send advanced payments upon presentation of proof that you will be attending a meeting or function outside the country. If you decide to supply credit card info by email, I think it is very safe. Although I must confess that my email is not protected from professional hackers, I do sell a lot on the Net and have not been hit yet.  Touch wood !

4.  HAU HIN PROGRAM.  We've confirmed only the WELCOME DINNER  &  the FAREWELL  DINNER.  Other than that, I have some ideas :-

a)   SILENT  AUCTION.   This was a huge success due the generosity of those who donated items and those who bid for them.  If you don't know what this is, let me explain.  People bring some item they want to donate.  It can be anything valuable or funny (Uttara gave us Tibetan Viaggra which was a hit). We put these items on a table and people inspect them and write down their bids. We added a new twist to this by having a regular auction during the Farewell Dinner to bump up the price even more.  It is lots of fun and the money raised was given to Father Van and Father Burns.

b)   CRAZY  WHIST. Loads of fun.  Great Mixer.  We could do that one afternoon.  You don't need to be good card player to win.  In fact, it's a handicap to be smart in this game.

Golf tournaments, Billiards, Badminton, Tennis, swimming. (Other than these, there will be tours and excursions, pool parties etc).

ANYBODY  ELSE  HAVE  SOME  SUGGESTIONS ?

Here are the new signees :-
RANABIR  SEN
DEB  MUKHERJI
RONNY  da  COSTA
LOUIS  BANKS
RAVI  THAPA
JOAQUIM  Da SOUZA

Roll Up !   Come one, Come All !!

Letter #4 - sent by Dan Windsor January 8, 2003

Dear  All,

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all.

Well, Joan and I (alright, alright, it's mostly Joan's work, sheesh Mo get off my back will ya !!)  just scouted some hotels and have finally come to a decision.   Here are the details :-

BANGKOK   Aug 2nd & 3rd  (OPTIONAL).  I've got a rate at the MANHATTAN  HOTEL on Sukhumvit Soi 15

Single  Room   B1,000  (US$23 at today's rates)  Incl 1 buffet breakfast
Double Room.  B1,200  ($32)   Incl 2 Buffet breakfasts
Triple Room    B1,600   ($37.50)  Incl 3 Buffet Breakfasts
Junior Suites   B2,600   ($61)  Incl 2 Buffet Breakfasts
Royal Suite   B4,600    ($108 )  Incl  4 Buffet Breakfasts

It is clean, very convenient  and centrally located.  Easy to reach from the airport, but Joan is looking into supplying airport pick-up if there is enough interest. STAY  TUNED.  Rooms are big and comfy. There is also a Sheraton opposite side of the road. For those interested, write to me and I will get you a corporate rate there.

There might be a dinner in Bangkok on 3/08  if someone wants to host it  but not confirmed yet, (any volunteers??)  If not, then you are on your own.

On Monday 4/08  air conned bus leaves for Hua Hin at 10.00 A.M.  from in front of The Manhattan  (I expect this will be about B 175 ($4)  per head).  2 & 1/2 hour ride.

At  HUA  HIN  We have block booked 50 rooms at  The MAJESTIC  BEACH  RESORT. This is a great hotel, right on the beach. Gorgeous pool, Sauna, meeting rooms, self-sufficient. The hotel is quite small, so we will practically have the run of the joint. Free shuttles to and from town (which is only 10 minutes away). The rates we have been quoted so far:-

DOUBLE  ROOM  @  B 1,600  (US $37.50)   incl buffet breakfast for 2
TRIPLE  ROOM  (Extra Bed)   @  B2,100  ($49)  incl breakfast for 3
JUNIOR  SUITE  (1 Bedroom)   @  B2,600   ($61)  breakfast for 2
2 BEDROOM  SUITE    @  B3,200  ($75)  breakfast for 4
3 BEDROOM  SUITE    @  B4,800  ($112.50)  breakfast for 6

Might do a little bit better, stay tuned !

There will be a limited number of certain types of rooms, so it is first-come-first-served.  Please check the list below to see if your name is on it. If not let me know as soon as you can.   Bookings by end Jan the latest and you can cancel before end March without penalty.

There will be a Welcome Dinner 4/08 and a Farewell Dinner on 7/08. See Sign Up Form, (which will be ready in about 1 week) for details.

We will stay in Hua Hin for 4 nights, during which time there will some other dinners and parties and dances (or should I say ''SOCIALS'') etc. hosted by individuals or groups of individuals.

This hotel has an agreement with MAJESTIC  CREEK  GOLF  COURSE  which allows you to play at a discount.  However, between you and me, even with this discount, there are many other courses, equidistant and just as good and much cheaper. Since it is a Buyers' Market, I will keep trying to get a better rate there.

We return by bus on the Morning of Friday 08/08 to The Manhattan Hotel again.  Same room rates apply.  It is up to you how long you want to say in Bangkok before and after HIHH  reunion.  Most of yas have been to Bangkok before so you know what to expect and can make your own plans.  The main thing is Hua Hin.  The idea is to put everyone in the same hotel, small and cozy, so we can spend time with each other and catch up at breakfast, around the pool, at the sauna etc, not just at the dinners and parties.

As I said, the sign up form will be ready in a few days. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, if you have already signed up and your name is not on the list below, please let me know.  The list has been arranged in the chronological order in which I received your confirmations

Since there is a shortage of Double rooms, for Loreto girls,  my sister Joan is planning to take up the 3 bedroom suites and share them, so you might be on her list already. (same old LCD girls !  safety in numbers HUH !!)  Let me know if I should take you off my list.

It's not going to be easy organizing this, so we really need your co-operation.  I know it is still far off, but there is pressure from these hotels. I know for many people, this is stll too far off to make confirmed plans. However :-

1.  When you get the Sign Up Form.  If you are sure that you are coming, please sign up and return it by email or by fax ASAP.  This will allow us to set the minimum number of rooms which will be the base of our negotiations.
2.  If you think you might be coming, please tell me so with your expected arrival and departure so I can estimate the final numbers, especially for  the Manhattan Hotel (Bangkok) part of it.  I really need this to give the hotel some numbers. In which case, there is no need to send back the form till you are sure.
3.  By the end of January the hotels expect us to give them some confirmed numbers. This we will do. At that time, I will over book by about 5 to 10 rooms for late comers.  No need to say these rooms are first-come-first-served, so don't take any chances.
4.  By the end of March, we must give them our final list.  Any cancellations after this, you will be billed for the first night.
5.  Anybody signing on after this will be out of luck, unless there is a cancellation.
6.  If you are a single and would like to share a room, please tell us so and we will try to match you up. Don't get your hopes up though as it will be ''same sex'' sharing.  (don't worry guys, no Paulites so it's safe!!)

My fax number is ( 66 2 )  381  2479.  This is a secure number so for those who are afraid to give out credit card details etc by email, you can use this number.  You can also fax back the Sign Up Form by this fax number.

Also, for those who have trouble sending attachments, let me explain that if you prefer, you do not need to send back the actual form itself.  Just give me the information we require by email of fax.  Please be as clear and as complete as possible.

Finally, if you know anybody not on my list, who might be interested to receive this, please forward it to them and ask them to write me back.
