The meal was excellent, as usual, and there was more than enough to eat.
In fact, the food ran out at the Bishop Cotton reunion being held at the
same time, in the Conservatory, and their overflow collected their food
from our allocation.
At the end of the meal, there were several contributions from the floor,
including reminiscences from Jules Del Espino (attending his first
reunion), Gerry Taylor (reminding us of those much less fortunate than
ourselves), Brian Boffey (being complimentary about the London reunions),
Sudanshu Rai (now an eminent Professor at LSE), and myself. Ian Prossor’s
beautiful partner, Anji Rolls, then took the microphone and said kind
things about my role in organising these reunions, and called for a toast
to me and my fiancée, Evelyn, who helps me with the admin. If I have
omitted anyone, please forgive me.
The incredible Fr Van
I paid tribute to Fr Van, the man behind the spread of NP Alumni
associations around the world, the Canadian Jesuit who has become the
custodian of the North Point spirit, that indefinable cement that binds us
together, even across the generations. Fr Van retires as Rector in
October of this year, but North Point must never let go of the man who has
done such wonders for the school, for its pupils, and for the larger
community. He sent a message to the gathering, which I read out after
lunch.
I’m getting married
I announced that I shall be marrying Evelyn Ryan in October, in Dublin,
and I very much hope Fr Van will be able to officiate.
R.I.P.
Sadly, we lost two old boys during the past year. They were:
Gerry Rayner NP ’41-’42 (UK)
Dick Rosair NP ’34-’44 (W. Aus.)
Please remember them in your prayers.
