Message from NP Alumni, Kolkata Chapter

Dear All

The 2007 Reunion is now just round the corner.  As many of you are aware the Calcuta Chapter is hosting a dinner for delegates passing through our city.  As of date there are about 40  ex-North Pointers including few spouses/Loreto Alumni from abroad who will be attending the dinner. All of them are participating at the 3rd Darjeeling Reunion, in Darjeeling from 27th March to 31st March.

We have now finalized the venue which is the Princeton Club at 26, Prince Anwar Shah Road, Merlin Project Complex (near Tollygunge Club).

It will be a Dinner/Dance which will start at 7.30pm and the dress code is Formal.  Charges for the event will be Rs. 650/- per person which includes drinks and dinner.  Please note all foreign guests are being invited to the event and cost for the same is being borne by some of members on behalf of the Alumni which is hosting the event .

The evening will be a success only if each and everyone of you will attend.  It will be a wonderful opportunity to interact with our fellow North Pointers who are located at various locations worldwide. You may contact the undersigned  (99030 22200) or Ms. Annabella  (2231 9489) for any further details.

Tickets for the event will be available from 8th March 2007 either from the Alumni Office or from Mr. V. Gulab at New Market.  We can have the tickets delivered to you against payment or you can have the same collected from our office or from Mr. V. Dear North Pointer,

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to an exhibition of Art by Ms. Ganga Devi Somany, and a Photo Exhibition by Mr B.K. Birla, at our home, at 26 Prithviraj Road, New Delhi 110 001 on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at 7.30 pm.

This will be followed by a Reception in your honour.

Some of the works of Art will be sold, for Charity.

The Art exhibition will continue from Monday, March 26, 2007 to Sunday, April 8, 2007, at PBC Art Gallery, Paharpur Business Centre, 21 Nehru Place Greens, New Delhi 110019.

About the PBC Art Gallery:

It is a non profit Art Gallery run for over a decade.

It promotes artists and in doing so, helps protect the environment.

It provides an opportunity to show their works, to art lovers and to buy Art.

About the artist:

Ms. Ganga Devi Somany

Web site is www.gangasomany.com

Ms. Ganga Devi Somany was born on 23rd September 1924 in Pilani to Mr. B.M. Birla & Mrs. Rukmani Devi.

She is not only a talented artist but also indulged in charity work, writing and other works but one thing that she enjoys the most is painting.

Her paintings are a part of the repertoire of London's British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

This is the first time that she would be participating in an Exhibition-cum-Sale of some of her works of art for charity.

She has been painting for thirty years now, has several exhibitions to her credit.

It is surprising that the only formal education she received on this art was when she was in school. It was more after her husband’s death, she became a serious painter.

That was the turning point in her life when she realized that she had to add meaning and serenity to her life. Painting gave her the comfort she required at that stage of life and this can even be seen through her paintings.

She belongs to the class of artists who paint for pleasure.

Her paintings are an extension of her personality.

Her canvasses emanate positive energy and optimism.

The central theme of most of her art works is feminity and womanhood.

It is as if she finds beauty in all aspects of life and portrays it so beautifully.

Mr. B.K. Birla:

Mr. Basant Kumar Birla, Chairman, B.K. Birla Group of companies, may have crossed 85, but has still not slowed down.

He is going ahead with expansions planned in cement, textiles and paper.

BK, one of the eldest members of the Birla clan, still controls one of the largest business empires in the country.

Mr. B.K. Birla is very well known all over the world, for not only as the foremost industrialist of India but also, as the founder of Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata.

Photography has been a passion for him, from his early days.

On behalf of the PBC Art Gallery Team, we look forward to your presence on the occasion and of receiving your acceptance.

Thank you.

With warm regards,

Kamal Meattle
